The 'Sabiá' (Thrush) Award was created by The Cambridge Latin American Research in Education Collective (CLAREC) during our event, 'The Role of Education in the Fake News Era,' which featured Márcia Tiburi and Jean Wyllis. In these unsettling times, as Latin Americans abroad confront the rise of the extreme right, fuelled by unprecedented levels of fake news that disrupt elections and daily life, this award celebrates those like Márcia and Jean who bravely fight against these dark forces in Brazil and from abroad. Both have faced threats and hate campaigns in Brazil, leading them to self-exile in France and Spain.

Inspired by the song 'Sabiá' by Jobim and Chico Buarque, this award embodies the pain and hope we feel while living away from our homelands—a hymn to the exiled in difficult times. I could hardly contain my emotions while presenting this award to the powerful Márcia. We are grateful for individuals like her and Jean, who stand at the forefront of this struggle against the extreme right, and we long for the day they can return to their homes and loved ones when the situation improves.
